ReadyNAS Pro 4 disk thrashing

Hi,

I've got a ReadyNAS Pro 4 that has 4 x 2TB drives in. They are currently approaching capacity - I think there is at most 260GB free.

In the past few weeks I've noticed that frequently the unit will be thrashing away for a good 5 minutes or more when I load my media centre software. While it's doing this the software is pretty much unresponsive. I don't think the software has changed, and the only configuration change I've made that pre-dates this thrashing by several weeks was enabling disk spindown (30 minutes).

Do ReadyNAS's normally exhibit this sort of behaviour when they approach full capacity?

The ext file system performance does degrade when the file system exceeds 90% full (or even somewhat sooner)
  • Thanks, that would explain it then. My write speed has dropped quite a lot too. I'm over 95% capacity at the moment.
