Hi Marc_V,
– thank you for your reply!
The unit is probably already very much out of warranty beeing as old as it is, so I wouldn't really hesitate to "break warranty" by replacing RAM. :-)
I'll give that a go, and order new modules right away.
In the meantime, I would be happy to pull the logs off of the unit and send them in for analysis, but which logs should I export? (Or, what command shoud I use to export the right logs via Telnet, when in Tech Support mode? Unit won't boot so I cannot export via web interface.)
I did use the much unofficial instructions at: https://onlyblueatwork.wordpress.com/2012/12/04/netgear-readynas-access-recovery/ to access the unit and to mount md0 so I guess I could get just about anything from there.
Unit is running OS 4.x.x.
Best Regards
/Jens

Hi Jens3
It would be best to download the full logs so we can check.
Have you tried using RAIDar to download the full logs?
On Tech Support mode if correct, you can look at /var/log/ and see if you can get to diagnostic.log, kernel.log, meminfo and system

After Memory test (30 passes, 999 errors), Disk test (_many_ hours, and passed), a few hours running in Tech support mode, another run of Disk test (aborted at 5% passed) then, finally, the OS Reinstall did work!
So now the unit is up and running and everything seems to be fine.
For how long, though? :-)
I have sent the log files.
Perhaps there are any clues to what may have happened.
Thank you!

999 errors in the memory test says it's not fine. The OS reinstall doesn't affect the memory test software, since it is built into the flash.
Are you running the stock memory, or did you upgrade it at some point?

Still original memory module. (So far the housing untouched.)
The curious thing is that OS reinstall did not work for a long time, but suddenly it did again.
Update: Did overnight Memory test again last night: 30 passes, 0 errors. Also udated both Bios (was V1.6, is now V2.0) and OS (4.2.30 to 4.2.31), just in case. Disk test running again now, also just in case: so far so good (81% done).
Any qualified guesses to how reliable this machine might be in a production environment?
