ReadyNAS RN 204 and UPS
Hi I have recently purchased a RN 204 and looking to ad a UPS. Quite frankly I find all the information rather confusing .... probably says more about me than the info! All I want is a UPS to protect ...

I have two CyberPower units: CP1350AVRLCD and CP1500AVRLCD. Both work with ReadyNAS. I use the 1500 to protect the RN202 and a nearby PC (the Nas is set up to do a graceful shutdown, I never bothered to do that with the PC).

Let's stop over-thinking the datasheet, that is just a distraction.
If the UPS isn't being monitored by the NAS (either over USB or the network), then the ReadyNAS will not gracefully shut down when the UPS battery drains.
(1) The RN204 can monitor a UPS that supports NUT directly by connecting the UPS to an RN204 USB port. NUT is being used over USB in this case.
(2) It can also monitor a UPS installed on another ReadyNAS (or a PC that has NUT installed) - in which case you do need to make sure the switch or router is also protected.
(3) It can also monitor a network UPS via SNMP.
A lot of UPS support NUT, and it is not a feature that UPS folks charge extra for.
Have you purchased a UPS? If so, what model?
If not, are you looking for advice on what works? If you want advice it would be useful to know your location.
As mdgm says, a lot of folks here use APC, but you do need to avoid UPS that use serial cables instead of USB. Cyberpower also works, and is what I use with my ReadyNAS (including an RN202).

Thank you for the clarification. No I haven't purchased the UPS and yes I am looking for advice thanks but I thik that I now have the info I need. I spoke to the tech at Powershield, he said that the unit had been tested on Synology but not Netgear so that options seems a bit of a risk. If any Cybepower or APC with USB works then I will source one of those. Regards Stephen

Hi StephenB .... thanks for the advice, have purchased CyberPower 1200 for the NAS, modem amd phone .... all set up and works fine. The UPS is recognised by the NAS and so all set uo for a graceful shutdown whne the inevitable power failure occurs. Regards Stephen
