ReadyNAS RN516 - mount_block_root+1f1 - Will not Boot

After restarting my RN516 this morning the error message "mount_block_root+1f1" is displayed.

In searching for the resolution to this problem I was lead to the following instructions on restoring the firmware via USB.

https://kb.netgear.com/29952/How-do-I-use-the-USB-Recovery-Tool-on-my-ReadyNAS-OS-6-storage-system

I created the recovery USB as instructed on my PC, but when I attempted to boot via the USB the same error message is diplayed.

The RN516 does not have a backup button so I followed the instruction to hold the "OK" button for 30 seconds, but this does nothing and "mount_block_root+1f1" is still displayed.

I then tried to enter the boot menu using the following instructions, but the boot menu does not load and "mount_block_root+1f1" is still displayed.

Is there a way forward or do I now have a brick that needs replacing?

  • The procedure to boot off USB on older RN516 units (with an old BIOS) is a bit tricky. It can take multiple attempts to get the timing right for pressing the O.K. button.

About 5 seconds after you power on the NAS, the touch key LEDs will go off full brightness

Press and hold the O.K. button as soon as the LEDs go off. You must be quick here. You can't press sooner as the touch key needs self-recalibration, you can't press later as the boot priority will be set within 3 seconds. You don't need to press the button too hard, but you do need to make sure the O.K. LED is turned on.

You can release the O.K. button once you see the "Boot from external USB" message shown on the display.

Please also note that not all USB keys are compatible.

      Thank mdgm,

I just tried to press OK as you have instructed but with no success. The Touch key LEDs go off after only 2 to 3 seconds.

Will it still attemt to use the USB even if it is not compatible? How will I know if I need to get a different USB? The USB recovery tool seemed to finish it's proceedure and appropriate looking files ended up on the USB.

Also, I am inserting the USB into the front USB. This is what the instructions said to do, but should I try one of the rear USB ports?

If the USB key is not compatible it won't be able to boot off it. The USB Boot Recovery tool may seem to work even on incompatible USB keys.

If the procedure has been followed correctly and it's failing to boot off the USB key then you should try another USB key.

It takes me multiple attempts usually to boot a RN516 system with an old BIOS off USB.

        Use the front USB port.
