ok thanks Stephen ill give that a go
i neglected to mention that the nas was operating on a UPS and would have shutdown when the battery got to 20%, does this have any bearing on the fault ?

ok stripped the unit down removing the PSU for testing since it continued to exhibit the same fault with all drives removed.
on testing the PSU (with a PSU tester), only the 5v was present. 3v and 12v are dead rails.
looks like a replacement is needed. are there any good recommended alternative (or modded) PSU's I can tinker with ?
