ReadyNas Ultra 2 booting issue - CASE #18994884 - SOLVED

Hello,

I seem to have a problem with my ReadyNas Ultra 2. Starting today, I was unable to access the device in any way (DLNA devices, Windows Explorer, Internet Explorer). Also, the fan was making a lot more noise than normal.

The RAIDAR utility also did not find the ReadyNas and the device does not show up in the list of devices attached to my router. Rebooting (several times) did not help.

Farthest I have got is this: when I reboot the ReadyNas and keep the RAIDAR utility open and scanning, it does find the ReadyNas just after starting up, showing "Booting" in the status field. It also shows both disks (with green light). Then, it shows "File check 100% complete", and just after that, the ReadyNas disappears from the radar again... Fan keeps spinning, blue power led is on, as wel as both green leds for the disks currently in the NAS.

Any ideas as to the cause and solution?

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

Elmer

I would suggest you open a tech support (http://www.readynas.com/support) case and edit the thread title (i.e. subject of first post in the thread) to include your case number. Basic phone support is free for the first 90 days after purchase. If over 90 days since purchase open an online case at my.netgear.com
  • Updated with case number. After browsing the forums, I did try to do a firmware reinstall. I am able to enter boot mode and select the OS Reinstall option. Then when I execute the option by pressing the reset button again, the RAIDAR utility shows as status "booting", "updating", and then again, nothing, ReadyNAS cannot be found anymore. Reinstall of the firmware started over an hour ago, but no progress. Just the green Disk1 led is on, fan spins, but no further activity. I did remove one of the two disks before executing the firmware reinstall just in case anything would happen to my data. I do have an external backup, but it is from several months ago, so I wouldn't want to lose the data accumulated since...
  • Update:

Removed both disks from the NAS and instead put in a different, empty, disk. Then performed the full factory reset. This works, meaning the ReadyNAS itself is not broken!

This would mean the issue is on the disks. Tried booting it with just one of two disks in the device (tried this with both disks), but in neither case the device boots correctly. Thus, the issue is present on both disks...

The only big question therefore is how to recover the data of both disks before doing the factory reset... I tried attaching it to a (Windows) computer with a SATA->USB adapter. Computer Management is able to see the disk and all three partitions, but not the contents of the partitions. Nor is DiskInternals' Linux Reader... this one is able to identify the three partitions as "RAID Linux" partitions, but is also unable to show the contents of the partitions.

    Any thoughts?

I would suggest continuing to work with support. They do have a way to remotely login to ReadyNAS units (they can provide instructions on how to give them access) if needed.
  • Problem is solved.

I was able to retrieve the files by using the free tool R-Linux (www.r-tt.com). With this tool it was possible to scan the RAID 1 drive directly from Windows without having to install a Linux OS on my laptop and then copy all retrieved files to an external HDD.

After this I performed a factory reset on the ReadyNAS and it is back to normal.
