Recommended Configuration - iSCSI, 3100, ESXi 4.1

Just wanted to find out what the recommended configuration for using the 3100 (4.2.15) as an iSCSI target for an ESXi 4.1 server?

Namely:

Should I limit it to (1 iSCSI target + 1 LUN + 1 VMware guest) or am I able to run multiple guest VMs off a single LUN from a single ESXi host?

If my switch doesn't support LAG but does support jumbo-frames, what's the recommended dual-NIC config? I'm currently using Adaptive Load Balancing.

Lastly, if I wanted to use one of the iSCSI targets to migrate guests between 2 ESXi host servers, is this possible?

Cheers.

  • I've been having some pretty miserable performance issues with the ReadyNAS 3100 as an iSCSI target for ESXi 4.1 so far.

I'm using this unit as a storage unit for an Exchange 2010 DAG with the 3100 used as the backup server's storage location for virtual disks. However, even on a dedicated switch set aside for iSCSI (jumbo frames enabled throughout), I get frequent errors that the backup server has dropped out of the quorum due to loss of connectivity with the hard drives.

    Any suggestions?
  • Can you please upgrade to 4.2.16 firmware, that should resolve the iSCSI drop outs.
  • Perhaps you could indicate some applications performance that is running (like MS SQL) etc?
