No, that didn't help. The software and options on that page were nothing like I have available to me.
The basic answer is that you first create a user account on the NAS. Then you set those account credentials in Finder (optionally telling it to add them to the keychain).

I think if you go back to my original post, my question was "...how does one set up users?". Clearly that's the first step that I can't get past...
