Remove Files On NAS That Were Deleted On Host
I have a ReadyNAS 2304. I bought it to do some backups in the near future for my business. Right now I am playing with it and getting the hang of how it works and using it to back up some of my smart home configurations. I am using Home Assistant and it creates snapshots every day, week, and month. These snapshots are automatically deleted at certain intervals so as to not have a bunch of uneccissary files. When I back these files up to my ReadyNAS, it just keeps adding the new file each day but doesn't remove the deleted files. I am using SMB to connect to my Home Assistant smart home hub to grab the snapshot files. I don't see any options in the backup settings that would tell it to remove files if they are removed on the host. Is this possible to do? (preferably in a simple way)

If you use the rsync protocol, it has that option.

I'm am mostly posetive that my smart home system does not support rsync

The only way this can be done, is as Sandshark said, via Rsync. It is the reason I use Rsync for every backup need that I have.
As a protocol it has an option to "Remove deleted files on target", which is what you are looking for. Unfortunately, this option is not available using SMB backups.

What type system is runing Home Assistant? The only program by that name I'm familiar with runs on Linux (typically, a Raspberry Pi), and rsync is a native Linux protocol. If you simply downloaded a pre-made image for a RasPi or Docker, it could be pared down to not include rsync, but you should be able to add it. From the command prompt on that system, type rsync and see what you get in response.

I am running home assistant's own OS (which is linux based I believe). I have asked around on the forums there and it doesn't seem that rsync available on it. In my discussions on the Home Assistant forum, I did find an add-on that will allow Home Assistant to make and send snapshot to a Samba share folder on another system and it will then maintain the backups itself and delete old ones. I will probably test this out and roll with this.
