Removed disk resync fails

If you simply reinsert disk 1 into its original slot (leaving disk 2 in place) then I think it will wipe your data. Disk 1 should be treated as a new disk in that scenario.
I would check the SMART stats on drive 1, as your stalling could in principle be caused by either drive.
Maybe test both drives with WDC's Lifeguard diag?
