On the size, I suggest pricing out a couple of options. Fewer but larger drives are often cheaper in the long run, especially if they leave empty bays for future expansion.
For example, I am seeing 6 TB Red Plus for about $170 each, 10 TB for $220 each, and 12 TB for $270 each
- 4x6TB would give 18 TB of storage for $680 - about $37/TB of storage
- 3x10TB would give 20 TB of storage for $660 - about $32/TB
- 3x12TB would give 24 TB of storage for $810 - about $33/TB
Expanding the 3 disk array just requires adding one more disk. Expanding the 4 disk array (with a 4 bay NAS) requires replacing two working disks with two larger ones.
I am also seeing 12 TB Red Pro for the same price as Red Plus...
