Replacing 2x2TB drives with 2x4TB on RN102 Help?

I have a 2 bay RN102 with two 2TB drives installed, With redundancy, giving me a total of 1.82Tb storage space. I'm near the limit of storage on the 2Tb's and wish to replace the two 2TB drives with two 4TB drives which I assume will give me about 3.7TB of storage space. My question is, what is the best way of transferring data from the 2 TB to the 4TB? When hot swapping I think the 4TB will be recognized as the same storage space as the 2TB.. as my understanding is the max storage always equals the smaller drive... Hence what would my storage be recognized as, once the 2TB was backed up to the 4TB, then the remaining 2TB I just backed up was hot-swapped with the second 4TB drive? Would the recognized storage still be (1.82) 2TB, or would it now be (3.7) 4TB??? Yes Raid confuses me. Am I going about this all wrong? I appreciate your recommendations. ;-)

Hot swap the first drive, and wait until it finishes resync.

Then hot swap the second drive. After resync the volume will expand (in your case double in size).

BTW, even with RAID you should have a backup of your data.
  • Thank you StephenB, that is what I was hoping for, but I wasn't sure. Thanks again, have a nice day!
