I have put it into read only mode and haphazardly get access to the admin panel. But that drops out like before.
At least it is seeing disks now!
That's good.
I suggest backing up the files over the network (connecting the USB drive to a PC). This works best if the PC is connected with wired ethernet. Drag/Drop is ok, but a copy utility that verifies would be better. Teracopy is one freeware PC tool that can do this, there are others.
Once the data is safe, we can then figure out your best option. One approach is to just do a factory reset and rebuild the NAS (restoring data from the backup).

Same version of software and same problem as OP. I'm happy to lose the data on the drive for now, but the factory reset did not work :( anyu ideas?

seems factory reset without the drives, then adding them one at a time, powering off for couple minutes between each step sorted my problem.

Did it reformat the drives?

That does nothing. The whole purpose of a factory reset is to wipe the disks, wiping all data, settings, everything.
john_grif can you download your logs using RAIDar 6.2 and send those in (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?
