RN102 write speed is extremely slow - what's the problem?

Hello.
Yesterday I bought a ReadyNAS 102. Before buying I read a lot of tests and I was aware of its advantages and disadvantages and in particular the slow speed writing. However, after connecting and configuring the NAS was very disappointed. Write speeds are extremely low. NAS is connected to the router TP-Link TP-WR841RD and is mounted WD Red 3TB. Regardless of whether it is trying to send data via wi-fi or ethernet cable transmission speed is appalling and is about 1.2MB/s-1.8MB/s. Maximum possible to achieve data transfer rates of 2.6MB/s speeds Such persist during both the data directly to the shared folders in Windows Explorer or by using Total Commander (sending to folders or FTP). It is very frustrating. Another problem is the data transfer speed of USB 3.0 portable drive - here again, the speed is appallingly low.

Do I got a defective copy of the NAS or something is wrong with my network? Although in the case of transfer by USB 3.0 network does not have anything to do with it yet.

Can I have some suggestions and advice from you?

Thank you very much in advance.

edit:
Just reset the RN102 and now transfer from an external drive via USB 3.0 are okay :) Unfortunately transfer via wifi or ethernet is still very very slow - on this issue without changes :(

Yes, the reset would erase the data.

Did the direct connection test give better results than via the router ?

If reset is associated with loss of data that does not have a chance to do it right now :/ By the way, NAS reset after each update, which involves the loss of data is a ridiculous idea. Who the hell came up with such a strange idea at Netgear?

As for direct connection to it honestly I did not have time for this. I'll do it over the weekend and will inform you of the outcome.

Try testing with NAStester (http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance). That will give us a reproducible benchmark.

Also try this over the weekend.
  • You will not need to reset the nas again if you've just bought it and the first setup installed 6.1.9. You said in your first post that you did a reset on 6.1.9, that's fine.
  • Oh yeah, you are right, I missed the edit. Sorry for that.
The reset was intended after the 6.1.5 update only. The reason is that the filesystem structure was changed. That's the only update that requires it. AFAIK 6.1.9 to 6.2.0 will not require a reset (beta doesn't).

For the data erased, I agree that an option to reset the configuration without losing the data would be great. I just want to remind the importance of backup, RAID is not a substitute for backup, you should have several copies of your data at all time.

With the result of the direct connection and the benchmark, I hope we will be able to help you this week end.
  • On the occasion of my problems with the update 6.2.1. I had the opportunity to connect NAS directly to a PC. Indeed, the problem of low speed read and write to the NAS due to the poor quality, slow router.

You don't need to do a factory reset (wipes all data, settings, everything) after any firmware update. Though there can be benefits such as the filesystem improvements in 6.1.5 (and later), getting a clean install etc.
  • I'm not sure whether this should be a new post, but I do seem to have a similar issue. My customer with a RN102 and newest 6.2.2 firmware update is experiencing very slow data transfer speeds over the network. When moving significant blocks of data, write speeds to the NAS vary between 10 to 100 times slower than writing the same data to a shared location on a peer Windows machine. Delete operations can hang up for minutes to hours. Odd errors pop up along the lines of "The action can't be completed because the file is open in another program" when it is not.

File share setup is pretty plain vanilla: SMB sharing, Anonymous access enabled. Anti-virus function on the NAS is enabled. Any ideas what could be going on and how to fix it?

NasTester (http://www.808.dk/?code-csharp-nas-performance) is a reasonable performance tester, and it makes it easy for other posters to compare what you are seeing with their results.

    I would
    (a) check the SMART stats on the disk

    Run NASTester

    (b) disable Jumbo frames if they are enabled
    (c) disable antivirus
    (d) create a test share with snapshots off and bitrot disabled.

Then run NASTester, and see how the speeds compare.

Antivirus will slow down writes, and snapshots/bitrot protection can also. Though it is easy to blame them, so doing some benchmarking is useful.
