RN104 - moving files between shares quickly
ReadyNAS 104
Software 6.2.3
Running Windows 7 x64, but have access to a XP machine and an Ubuntu 14.04 one.
At the moment, I've been Cut/Pasting data to move from one share to another with Teracopy - this has been taking a really long time, because (as far as I'm aware) it's copying the data onto the computer I'm using? So it's going from NAS > PC > NAS, which seems ridiculous to do, and is taking a really long time for even a small amount of data. However, I've got loads of data that needs moving, and Teracopy is saying this will take days to move, assuming nothing goes wrong and I leave the machines on the entire time.
Is there a simple way to have the data be moved directly from one share to another?

- NhellieVirtuosoInstead of cut/pasting, I suggest you just create a backup job from your pc to nas or vice versa or if you have 2 readynas units you can use rsync.

Are you using a gigabit router btw? Also, you might want to read this thread below, it will give you an insight on how to test and improve the NAS' performance:
viewtopic.php?f=21&t=75614 - EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredHello,
you are right. You would want to leave the PC out of it if you need to copy a lot of data. Have you tried the performance if you use the web interface to copy files? There you can select multiple files and then cut&paste them somewhere else by right-clicking on the selection. This should be an operation without the PC detour.
Bye,
Eskender - EskenderNGNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou could also use backup jobs Local -> Local. However, this would copy and not move your files. Again, this would not require the PC to be connected.
Bye,
Eskender - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf you are moving between shares, you end up copy/deleting locally anyway because each share is its own subvolume.
There is a workaround with ssh - https://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopi ... 35#p422574 - NothingNiceToSaAspirant

I've just figured out how to do this!
Web interface > Shares > Browse (then cut/paste)
This is saying it'll take 15+minutes for 16.9GB of data. It's being a lot quicker than that though. A huge improvement on last time. Nice one! It looks like it's still working even when I exit the web interface, which is nice! - StephenBGuru - Experienced User(in case others want to know this): Browse the share in the web ui. Selecting multiple entries depends on the browser - firefox works (hold down ctrl while selecting with left mouse click).
After selecting, right click - you will see copy. After copy, navigate to the new location and right-click/paste. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredI think I read somewhere that reflink was going to become default behaviour. Not sure if that has been implemented yet though.
- EDCULAspirantI take it the shares are on the same NAS?
I logged in to my nas (although on a mac) as admin user.
There is a folder called data. Inside there all the shares are folders. you can easy drag from one folder (share) to another and it moves instead of doing the drag to copy or the cut and paste - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
You'll only see data if you are using the admin credentials.EDCUL wrote: I take it the shares are on the same NAS?

With previous releases the drop/drag across shares actually did a copy/delete - because the shares are btrfs subvolumes, the default linux settings treat them as separate "drives". That might have changed recently - I'm not sure.
