RN104 Can't access large folders

Hi

I have a ReadyNas RN104 which has a folder in it with about another 2500 folders inside of that. When I click on it to open it via the browser it does not open. Though it does via file explorer. Is there a limit to how many folders/files that you can see in the browser

Thank you

    Hello Zebedee1,

ReadyNAS units have main folders (default and created ones) that are called shares, when you go to the admin page's Shares this will show these folders and insides these shares you can create/add subfolders. I would like to know if you were referring to a share when you said "ReadyNas RN104 which has a folder in it with about another 2500 folders inside of that. When I click on it to open it via the browser it does not open" and from which window do you do this "When I click on it to open it via the browser"?

Moreover, accessing the shares via web browser uses HTTP. So, you need to make sure this is enabled on the NAS settings as well as on the settings of the share that you want to access that way. See screenshots I added below:

Hope this helps you. Let us know.

  • I see no replies to your question and am wondering if you are still having a problem.

As i too have the same model and have been spending a lot of time with it recently and also researching the differences in the various models. For example, just yesterday I was browsing (using IE 11 browser) some large folders that have a lot of jpg images in them. This was from a back up of a friend's WD external hard drive that I had replaced a damaged USB connector that had broken loose from the printed circuit board due to a fall on the concrete patio from a tall speaker at a party. I was careful to back up this hard drive and am still keeping the back up until I have confirmation that this person has bought a secondary backup device and has completed a backup for safekeeping.

Back to our subject of not being able to access large folders. My first thought now is are you giving the unit time to serve up the files? I say this because this is what I have found to a problem when I first started playing around with the RN104. After taking a spin around this back up of large folders and files yesterday I realized that after clicking on a folder that I needed to release my grip on the mouse and lean back on the couch and wait for the preview images to show on the side panel. I fooled around with changing the various ways to display the view or results. Most times I like to display files by their name, date created and size. I only change the view to a thumbnail image if I am going to look for images to straighten up or turn left or right and sometimes to delete bad photos. I will say that displaying the files by name is quicker than by image. You can image why. I will be thinking of your question today when I get back to browsing folders and files again. In the meantime I have been reseaching upgrading to a faster and more expensive NAS to serve my need for speed. I never realized there would be a need for more speed until I bought this 2nd NAS to use for larger backups. My first NAS was the Stora which I still have. I still love my Stora for it's small size and redundancy. But, now I want something that will quickly serve up images and also do some video streaming throughout my home. I hope you are having a better time with your NAS now since it's been a year and one day (Wow!) since you posted this question that no one has offered any help with. Let me know here if you want to discuss this RN104 in the future. It's a great box but there are many more models now to choose from for everyone's distinct uses. I myself never thought I would need a faster NAS.

It is a photo folder named Photo's created by going into the shares and clicking on add folder. It is set as SMB. Inside there are about another 2500 folders named with dates e,g,  2016-01-28 etc Inside each of those folders is about 20 jpg files. I have it set to display them in details view. When I try to open it the little cursor next to the folder spins for a while. The blue line moves across the top as in its searching, then everything just stops and nothing is displayed. I'm thinking this NAS's 512MB of memory is just not enough. Folders with less files in them open no problem.
