What you want to do is prevent expansion, and access the disks in jbod mode. if the RN104 is confused about these drives being external (which I think it is), then flexraid would be the obvious thing to try.
But you've done that... Did you select one drive at a time when you said "new volume". Also, I think "new" means "new" it would end up btrfs, and not ntfs.
