RN104 X-RAID2 back to 2 JBODs?
Hi. I have 2 HD's in my RN104, of 1.5Tb and 3Tb. I'm new to this and I've foolishly configured them as X-Raid (yes, I'm an idiot  ). Problem is, it has autoconfigured them as a 1.5Tb RAID-1 volume (I have "lost" 3Tb) and right now I need the space more than the security or Raid1.
Can I safely remove one of the disks in this X-RAID2 configuration (I'm assuming both are mirrors of each other), format it in my PC (for example) and reinstall it in the RN104 as a new volume, having 2 JBOD volumes of 1.5 and 3 Tb where I had 1 X-Raid1 of 1.5Tb?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserUnfortunately you need to switch to flexraid and then destroy the volume (backing up the data first). After that you can create two jbod volumes.
- igl00AspirantOuch, well I'll have to buy another HD tomorrow then. Thanks!
- Jigar_soniAspirantfirst switch to flex raid and format your new hdd & create new volume (REMEMBER DON`T CLICK ON "add parity"

I've already bought a new 3Tb HD which should arrive tomorrow. At this point I'm probably going back to X-RAID. Having 3 drives (1.5+3+3 Tb) I should get 4.5Tb free space plus redundancy. I'll have a full day to think about what to do when the disk arrives.
Thanks! - itsjasperLuminaryI would pull the 1.5TB and replace with the new 3TB, giving you a 3TB RAID1 config, then format the 1.5TB and use this separately.
- jderasAspirantitsjasper, Just to share the knowledge :) Why would the 4.5Tb (1.5+3+3) *not* be a better solution?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredIt depends what you want to achieve. If you don't need the space for now, you might prefer to have a 2 disk RAID-1 volume rather than a 3 disk RAID-5 volume. You can always add additional 3TB disks to expand the volume down the track.

Both options (1.5+3+3) XRAID2 or flexraid with 2x3TB RAID-1 and 1.5 JBOD) offer the same amount of space. If the 1.5 TB drive is healthy, I'd just keep it as part of the XRAID array. If you are worried about the drive health, then its best not to use it all.jderas wrote: itsjasper, Just to share the knowledge :) Why would the 4.5Tb (1.5+3+3) *not* be a better solution? - jderasAspirantThank you both, makes sense!
