Hi, if you are going to replace the 500Gb with another 3Tb disk, I understand you only have to add only that disk.

But it the new disk is larger than the other three, this new one will wait for another new disk to fill the extra capacity. But you will have to wait to rebuild the first disk.

Thats what I understand, but I dont know...

When you replace the 500 GB drive with a 3 TB one, then your volume will increase by 500 GB - 3 TB total (2.7 TiB).

Everything will work, but 2 TB of space will be unused. When you later replace one of the 1 TB drives with a 3 TB drive, then the volume will increase to 5 TB (4.5 TiB). At that point all the space on the disks will be used by the RAID array.

FWIW I recommend NAS-purposed (Seagate VN or WDC Red) or enterprise drives. The WD30EFRX or WD40EFRX are both suitable for your RN104. Upgrading with 4 TB drives is slightly more cost effective, so if the budget stretches to that you might want to consider using them instead.

    The best way is to change it with the NAS running (remove the old drive, hot-insert the new one). Though it should also detect the new drive if you insert it with the NAS powered off.
