RN212 Cannot Update Virus definitions
I have an RN212 with firmware 6.10.10. It has been working well for a couple of months. 2 days ago, I'm getting the below error message. The NAS is on the network and accessible without issues. I...

I have an ancient (2010) ReadyNas Ultra 4 on firmware 6.10.10 that I ONLY use as a backup destination for a QNAP. LIke the OP and others, I started getting the ClamAV errors in October. Thanks StephenB for the explanation.
I think I will just keep using it until it dies (it may outlive me). Yeah, it's painfully slow, but I hardly ever need to to actually access it. What a tank of a NAS. I back up to Backblaze and air-gapped SSDs as well, but using rsync with snapshots turned on seems like a great use off it.
Am I crazy?
I get that vendors have to have a EOL for support. Heck, if it was Google, it would have been bricked a decade ago.

I don't think so. My main NAS is an RN526, and I am planning to continue to use it indefinitely. It is fast enough for my needs, and not on the internet - so the lack of security updates shouldn't be a problem.

I am not too bothered by the AV error definitiion, but it would have been nice to keep the "apps", as the apps would be "usable" on the ReadyNAS (Even if the firmware and AV were discontinued) or at least a way to install an alternative AV, as I am sure even with the ReadyNas reaching end of life support, many units will run for ages and years. Mine is actually "young" as it is probably just 1-2 years old.

There are more hoops to jumb through than before.
But you can still download them using web.archive.org, and the deb files can still be installed.
Do keep in mind that these apps are old, and many are missing important updates. Netgear never supported the third party ones, so you use them at your own risk.

HI Stephen,
When you say your RN526 is not on the internet - curious what this means exactly. My boxes are all on my home network, and my home network can be accessed remotely in several ways (Remote Desktop for example, if enabled), and I can VPN into my home network.

I think he means, it can't connect on the internet to the Netgear servers for virus definitions, firmware upgrades or apps as all their servers are removed/shut down, so you will get an error if you try and ask it to check for firmware etc as being "not connected to the internet and to check your internet connection" - which is actually fine, its just it cant locate their servers on the DNS, as they are no longer there.

It means that there are no inbound connections from unknown sources over the internet to the NAS.
- No ports are forwarded in the router to the NAS.
- No apps installed that would allow remote access
- upnp is disabled in my router
NTP and DNS are set up, so the time is synced to internet time.
So a remote bad actor needs to gain access to my home network before they can take advantage of any security vulnerabilities on the NAS. That actor can't gain that access via the NAS, since they can't connect directly to it.

I also use openVPN and remote desktop services, so I am trusting their authentication.
Of course if a bad actor somehow gains access to my home network, they could infect the storage. But my backup plan takes that possibility into account.
