I'm on 6.10.3 and I figured out if I unplug my usb backup drive, it works normally. But if I plug that back in the problems develop again.

Is the drive a desktop model with a separate power supply, or a portable powered by USB? If the latter, you are probably stressing the power capability of the NAS and should employ a Y cable for dual port power or switch to a desktop model. If the former, look for errors in the logs.

Actually it has it's own power supply and I have been using it for over a year as a backup drive. I also noticed now, the backups pretty much fail no matter whatever I do (they get part way and then fail). I even reformatted the drive. If the backup starts and I hit cancel, it locks up. If I reboot the NAS, it still stuck at 'canceling' and just seems to be overall messed up. No big deal I just won't use the backup drive since the NAS works correctly without it.
