RN516 No Boot Menu, Model error and Touchpad not work

Hello,

I have a RN51600 with three problems.

  • No boot menu
I press and hold the reset button, the system powers on. Continue to press the reset button for three minutes, however the status display screen shows a big Booting message.It is stuck there. Steps I've taken are from here:

https://kb.netgear.com/23005/How-do-I-access-the-boot-menu-on-my-ReadyNAS-316-516-716

  • Model error
Power off the system, I put in 1x1TB drive with some unimportant data. RN516 can boot normally and I can log in http://192.168.112.4/admin/. Follow the photos I upload, RN516 main page shows the wrong model ReadyDATA 516 and the wrong device picture. Now the firmware is 6.10.5 Hotfix 1. I can format the 1TB drive and build a new volume, add a user, setup the share folders. Of cause I can read and write the files with Windows PC.

  • Touchpad not work
Power on RN516, after the nas can be visited, all the touch keys do not work.  The Up, Down, Left, Right arrows never light up. The OK button can light up when touched.Even though, the display screen never lights up. When I insert a keyboard, press the Up, Down, Left, Right arrows and Enter button, the display screen scrolls options normally.

It's not fixed when I use the USB Boot Recovery key. I see "Boot from external USB" shown on the display and then "ReadyNAS USB Recovery". But it shows "DEBUG: TELNET 192.168.112.4" at last, and stuck there. Steps I've followed are from here:

It stays the same when I update the lastest firmware 6.10.5 img via the website.

I have tried to boot from a Windows PE usb key, I test its own 239MB flash with MyDiskTest and DiskGenius. It seems well, no bad blocks.

This maybe help:
BIOS Vendor-----------------American Megatrends
Core Version-----------------4.6.5.3
Compliancy------------------UEFI 2.3;PI 1.2
Project Version--------------1APUY 0.15 x64
Build Date and Time-------10/11/2013 09:36:46

Is there anything else I can do to repair the system? Something is wrong, what exactly is it? The 239MB flash? How to test it?

Many thanks,

Ela

  • I suspect somebody created a hybrid.  RDD516 board in an RN516 chassis.  Since they look identical, they likely didn't realize the problems it would create.  It may even be that if you create a volume on another OS6 system that you can move to this hybrid and it will mostly work.

  • I like NETGEAR NAS.
I used ReadyNAS nv+ years ago, and upgraded RN31400.Now I have an RN31600 running.

The boot problem seems to be disk-related, since it does work with your test disk.  I suggest trying to boot with your test disk in each of the 6 slots, just to confirm that all bays are functional.  I guess the boot problem could also be power related (as 6 disks require more power than one).

Some of the issues could be due to a corrupt eeprom (that is where the model information comes from).  You'd need help from Netgear to fix that.  Sometimes the mods will do it as a courtesy, other times you need paid support.  Perhaps give DaneAJohnCM_SMarc_V a chance to chime in.

        Thank you for your suggestions.

First I try to exchange the power supply inside the RN316, And update the fireware again.  Second I test disk in each of the 6 slots.
