Unfortunatly I ran out of time. I had been without a backup solution for several days and had to decide to continue to rescue the data or get the backup solution online again and the backup won. I factory reset the NAS and all seems to be fine now.
Still don't know what caused this originally and guess I never will but I will keep my eyes on it carefull for a while.
Thanks very much for your help and comments I have learned more about the system and are more confident with it so there has been some gain.
