RND4000v2 (ReadyNAS NV+ v2) Won't Boot
The unit is stuck on the following message "Checking root FS" it has been stuck on this for hours, how do I get past this?

Again, you don't want to format it. Rather you want to unformat it.
With windows, right click on computer and select manage. You can then right-click on any "volumes" shown in the windows disk manager for the drive, and delete them.
Or use a vendor disk diag (lifeguard or seatools), and use the test to zero the drive. There's a quick-erase test in one of them (I forget which) that zeros sectors at the beginning and end of the drive. That will wipe the partition info, so the NAS will see an unformatted drive.
It's a NV+ v2, 8TB using 3x Samsungs & 1 WD, all 2TB, had no reports of disk errors, the last message was the disks spinning down, but the NAS wasn't accessible over the network, Don't know what version of firmware is installed but think it was the last one and it is either RAID 5 or XRAID, after restarting it stays on booting for about 15 mins and then goes onto the message Checking boot FS and no IP is displayed below.
Did you use the guide in the link to determine the model you have? The v2 on the unit is not enough to determine the exact model.
Do you have a backup?
Is the device still under warranty?
How long have you left it with the checking fs message?
I would start by testing all the disks using vendor tools (Seatools may work with the Samsung drives and wd lifeguard). I think there may be a Samsung tool but you'll have to find it.
Booting using the skip volume check boot menu option is something you could try too, but if you have no backup this carries some risk of data loss.
Thanks for the reply, It's definately a NV+ v2, I have no backup and it is out of warranty, is it safe to perform a test on drive using the vendor tools, will this not test the ability to write to the drive?
It is safe to run the vendor tools, the destructive tests all give clear warnings with both lifeguard and seatools. The usual SMART test, short test, and long generic tests are non-destructive.
Just looking at the SMART stats will likely tell you something. Acronis Drive Monitor is one freeware tool that will show them to you on a PC (though they require your email address in order to download it).
You do need to power down the NAS when removing and reinserting the drives (since you don't want it to detect the removal/reinsertion). It's best to label them by slot, and preserve the slot order.
