RNDU2000 (RND-2A) Not Powering Up at all

Unhappy times in Newcastle after storm aftermath.

Have a Netgear RNDU2000 NAS (RND-2A) with 2 x WCAWZ1544050 3.0TB WD SATA Drives (RAID 1) and have been using it as a home backup repo for several years now. We lost power with the storms here for 5 days and we could power up the NAS after power was restored. However some unknown time after the NAS was not on and could not be started up at all. There is no activity when pressing the power button, the PSU has been check and is working and have also tried a replacement just in case with no change.

My question is how can I retrieve the data from the RAID 1 set? I speculate there would be 3 ways:
1. Buy an identical NAS and transfer the drives. Is the RAID set info and the security saved somewhere on the drives or is it stored somewhere on the NAS?
2. Buy a NAS that has a similar architecture and transfer the drives. If this is possible what Models should I need to look for?
3. Run up a LINUX box and transfer the drives into this SOE...

Any information on any of these would be appreciated. As the USB drive backup has not been ran since I stole the HDD for another task 2 years ago

Advance thanks to any insight offered.

    1. Yes that would work. The OS is installed onto a partition on the drives, and the config is stored on the drives, as well as your data. Assuming the disks, array and volume are fine this should be straightforward.
    2. Any legacy x86 ReadyNAS running 4.2.x would do, however they are all long end of life. You could get one of our new x86_64 devices e.g. 312. If you go down this route it would be best if you contact support and don't insert the disks from the old NAS until prompted to by support. Assuming the disks, array and volume are fine this should be straightforward.
    3. Yes, you can use an ordinary x86 Linux box. Assuming the disks, array and volume are fine this should be straightforward.
  • Wow... really impressed with the speed of reply MDGM. Thank you.

Option 1: This is proving to be hard given the age to find one that matches.

Option 2: I can not find the CPU type of RND2000, are they all going to be a x86 or is there a chance of them being a Marvel (which is not compatible?) Otherwise I can reinvest in the 312, but sounds cumbersome with the need of support.

Option 3: Is there a guide for this process, or a post that covers this off at all?

    Cheers,

#2: It has an Intel Atom CPU. Any legacy ReadyNAS that ran RAIDiator-x86 4.2.x with an Intel CPU should do i.e. Ultra/Ultra Plus/Pro Series.

The procedure to use a new model with Intel CPU (i.e. 300 series and up in desktop storage) such as the 312 is straightforward provided the disks, array and volume are fine:

    1. Put scratch disk (must not be from your array) in the 312.
    2. Update the 312 to latest firmware, verify the firmware update is successful, power down, remove the scratch disk.
    3. Migrate the disks across (Keeping the order the same).
    4. Power on the NAS normally
    5. Some things may display incorrectly (OS4.2.x does not expect OS6 hardware) but you should be able to access your data (see RAIDar or the LCD on the front of the NAS for the I.P.) and copy your data off.
    6. Verify your backup is good
    7. Do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything)
    8. Restore your data from backup

#3: We use mdadm, LVM and EXT4. The process is very standard.

    Something like this:

    # mdadm --assemble --scan
    # vgchange -a y
    # mount -o ro /dev/c/c /mnt
  • Cheers MDGM,

Currently grabbing my data via a LINUX box and pricing a new 312 to join the family.
