RNDU6000 won't expand from 5x6TB to 6x6TB X-Raid2
My RNDU6000 runs (ran) 4.2.26 fine with 5 WD Red 6TB drives in X-Raid2.
I added a 6th 6TB drive about 68 hours ago and the system started expanding.
Now that it has finished it says 'expansion failed'.
The percentage of the array used stays the same (around 97%) and the 6th drive shows as up and running and part of the array, but it isn't.
The array is still accessible.
What to do to get that 6th disc working in the array?
I'm thinking of replacing the 6th disc with another, but it doesn't show as failed so what good could it do...

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserHave you submitted a support request?
- tijgertGuideNo, I figured I'd get the magic answer here much quicker.
Actually, I made a big oopsie I only now noticed, it's not my primary RN516 that has this error, it's my old trusty RNDU6000 running 4.2.26. It's my backupnas that I subjected to expansion of 6TB's first.
Issue remains the same -> 'expansion failed'. Needless to say I don't have support on that machine anymore so help me Obi-Wan, you're my only hope... - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredWith 4.2.x you can't expand a volume past 16TB. You have to do a factory reset with that capacity in place. That's why the expansion failed.
You will need to do a factory reset to get a higher volume capacity.
OS6 doesn't have this expansion limitation on x86_64 hardware. - tijgertGuideAh.. I knew about the limit, I just figured it was for expanding OVER that limit as a line so that if I already had more than 16TB it wouldn't be a limitation.
Good. Clear.
So I'll just back up my settings, FR the unit, restore the settings (I'm assuming the old settings can be used with a larger capacity? Please confirm) and let it copy from the main nas for the next three days. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYes. If a volume is over 16TB it can't be expanded.
Be sure to install add-ons again before restoring the config backup. - tijgertGuideGood point, even though I only had Replicator installed and didn't even use it.
I want my backup nas to be as virgin and standard as can be, in case of a catastrophic extinction-of-my-files level event of my main nas.
Thanks, let's see how the RN516 fares after the backup is back-up :) - tijgertGuideHmmm.. new issue: I upgraded my RNDU6000 to 4.2.27 before a Factory Reset. That seemed to work fine.
I then selected Factory Reset from the browser menu (NOT from the Boot Menu.. does that matter?) and it started doing it's thing.
Now after a full day it's almost done and I figured I'd take a look see in Frontview, but it won't let me in.
The creds admin/password don't work... My old own creds also don't work, which was to be expected, but the name of the nas in Raidar is still the old name it had before the reset.
What gives? - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredThe OS4 default credentials are different to the OS6 ones. The default password is netgear1
- tijgertGuideYeah I was looking for that, it's not easy to find..
I inadvertently changed the default password in my big'ol-password-list to the OS6 variant when I upgraded.. never reverted that back.
Thanks mdgm.
