RSYNC backup og Vmware/veeam replicas
Hi To be honest I couldn't find the correct NAS when creating this post.... the NAS I am having trouble with is NETGEAR RN42600-100NES. I've setup RSYNC backup between my two ReadyNAS 426 and...

Does the NAS have user accounts and groups that match the UIDs/GIDs of the accounts on the VMserver?
Perhaps use ssh, and see if the UID/GID of the files are preserved or not (ignoring the user/group names).

Hi and thanks for the answer. No it doesn't have accounts and groups matching the ones on the VM server.
Done some more testing and it seems like the problem is that the new files created when a snapshot is created, they havn't got inheritance enabled. When I enable inheritance on these files everything works fine. Funny thing (or weird) is that when the first snapshot is created inheritance is disables and permissions are changed but not "very much" so this snapshot can still be accessed by rsync. But then when another snapshot is created all permissions are removed except for the guest user and then the rsync error occurs.
Any suggestions on how to enable or force inheritance on these files? Perhaps if it is possible to run a script automatically on all new files created in a share and it's subfolders?

If this is only about ownership, there is a setting that will apply the share owner to all files in the share (after the backup runs). That would require a "pull" backup (running the backup on the destination machine).
If the directory structure is mostly stable, you could also go in with SSH and set up your own ACL for the subfolders in the destination share.

Hi Stephen and thanks for getting back to me.
It's actually the pull backup that isn't allowed to read the files from the source :(
Done a little more testing. Seems like it's vmware which ignores the inheritance when it creates the files on the NFS. When I create files through SMB everything works.
Not very comfortable with SSL. Any tips? Lets say the nfs share is /Data/replica and I just wan't "Everyone" to be able to read and write files.

This isn't something I've done a lot of. My impression is that it's best done with the native file system, not via NFS - which is why I was thinking ACL. There is some information here: https://linux.die.net/man/1/setfacl
But I could easily be wrong on the best practice here, hopefully other community members will chime in.
