Just answering my own problems:
The uid and gid errors with Rsync have been filed as a bug:
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=124&t=53113 including a work around
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=332968#p332968
Now another question
Opening port 873 isn't enough to get my W7 64bit Pro machine to talk to the ReadyNAS' Rsync.
Does anyone know what change to my firewall might be required?
EDIT: 873 is enough.
