Rysnc fails on backup device because share on main device is hidden

Hi

I have 2 ReadyNAS devices. My main device is a ReadyNAS Pro 6 (X-RAID2) and my back up device is a ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition (X-RAID2.

I have setup Rync on the backup device which has a seperate backup job (there are 6 of them) for each share and every night copies changes in each share from the main device to the equivalent share on the backup device. This has been working fine for 2/3 years.

Last week I decided I wanted to hide one of the shares (simply called 'Other') on the main device so it could not be seen by any users. I clicked on "hide this share when a user browses the ReadyNAS for available shares" - this is within the Share Display Option of CIFS for the relevant share.

However now the backup job for this share fails (the others still work fine) - see message below:

INCREMENTAL Backup started. Sat Oct 14 02:05:02 WEST 2017

Job: 006
Protocol: rsync
Source: 192.168.1.6::Other
Destination: [Other]/

Error: Unknown module 'Other'
rsync error: error starting client-server protocol (code 5) at main.c(1534) [Receiver=3.0.9]

Backup failed. Sat Oct 14 02:05:03 WEST 2017.

Reason for failure:
Error encountered copying data from remote source path 192.168.1.6::Other ==> /Other/ due to unknown reason. Please see log.

I assume its becuase the backup ReadyNAS also cannot see the share on the main device. How can I change this to allow the backup to continue but hide the share from all users?

Thanks for any help with this

G

  • That seems odd, since rsync shouldn't be tied to CIFS.

If you unhide the share, does the backup job run?

Also, what firmware are you running on the two NAS?

Hi - thanks for the reply

I worked out the problem. When I was trying to hide the share from view I played around with some the other CIFS options/settings first which I then reset, but I had not noticed that this also disabled the rync settings on the main NAS for that share (ie allowing the 2nd NAS to have access). Have reset that and left the hidden option on and it now works again.

      Kind regards

      G

Thx for following up.  RSYNC being disabled on the share definitely explains what happened.

I'm glad you're up and running again.
