Samba daemon using almost 100% CPU
I've only noticed this happening for around 6 months now. I'm running the latest R4 firmware on my Pro 6. Every now and then I will notice file transfers are slow, so I ssh in and fire up top. sm...

Assuming that's /dev/md0?
Mine shows 44% used; 2.2GB available.
Strange thing is a reboot will usually resolve the issue. I rebooted after my initial post and it seems to be ok still today. However, it is typically only a matter of time before I notice file transfers starting to slow down. And when I log on and run top it will be smbd at 95%+

Does this happen often?
I'm wondering if shutting down crashplan for a bit makes sense (if only to rule it out).

I guess it doesn't happen non-stop. I would say once a week to once every couple weeks. When it happens I've tried shutting down the crashplan service to see if smbd CPU comes down but it does not. It's usually a reboot that fixes it, and occasionally I have seen it spike back up again after a reboot.
I understand that crashplan puts extra load on the NAS, but not sure how it can impact the samba daemon. Plus crashplan on my NAS is pretty idle. I only have it configured to back up certain shares that don't change much, if at all, and all of the data has already been uploaded to their cloud.
I suppose I could shut down crashplan and just leave it for a few weeks to see if it prevents the smbd issue. Curious what the true cause is however.

I'm also thinking that it likely isn't crashplan. I was mostly thinking that it might be useful to rule it out.
Another thought is that there might be some subtle incompatibility with the new memory you added, which occassionally triggers some bad behavior. You could try cycling the memory test for while.
