Scan problems with Logitech Media Center 7.7 on ReadyNAS
Background: In July and August I tried about eight versions of SqueezeBox Server (now called Logitech Meids Server), mostly various daily nightlies of version 7.6, and came to the conclusion that something about the tagging of certain files in my collection was causing the scan to hang or abort on the ReadyNAS NV+ (as part of the long process of trying to track down the cause, I installed SBS on a Windows PC and there was no problem scanning those same files). At one point I was in touch with the developer and uploaded several problem files, but he wasn't able to find any particular problem with them. Over a period of weeks, I kept repeating the scans and eventually located all problem files, removed all tags and re-tagged them, and I was eventually able to complete a scan SqueezeboxServer_7.6.2~33283-sparc-readynas.bin. I have been running that version of SBS for a few months now.
However looking at the scan logs yesterday, I got the impression that scanning was not again not completing properly. The "most recent" scan log dated from over a month ago. (Info: I have the Timer enabled and set to scan for new and changed files once a day). So I decided to try version 7.7).
I installed LogitechMediaServer_7.7.1~33737 and I seem to be having the same problem with an "Endless scanning loop" as described in a post on the Logitech forum (http://forums.logitech.com/t5/MySqueezebox-com-Squeezebox/Endless-scanning-loop-7-7/td-p/720310/page/3") . I installed LogitechMediaServer fresh according to instructions, starting with a firmware update, running Clean_SqueezeCenter_DB_1.0.bin before and after and rebooting each time. I set the options to scanning music files only. The first scan seemed to be progressing well and was about half over when I left. I came back several hours later *to find that a new scan had started*. I assume that this is what happens when a scan doesn't complete properly? I had set scan logging to Debug level, but I can't find any Scan log to try to see what file the scan hung/aborted on if any - *the new Scan log wiped out the old one*. Meanwhile the second scan ended with an error message:
<< Media scan terminated unexpectedly (Scanning Progress) Total Time:04:23:52 (Sun, Dec 4, '11 / 23:41)>>
QUESTION: What is it about the NV+ that is causing Squeezebox Server (Logitech Media Center) 7.7 to have problems with certain files, when the same server software has no problems running under Windows?
Thanks

- ShardstratAspirantGood news about the focus being still on music. Thanks for that.
I ran in debug mode for a long time when I was trying to help sort out the scan problem, and no, it never actually threw an error message, up to the last version I tried (7.6.2). But you could more or less figure out what file it had choked on by where it had stopped.
I'm curious as to what performance you get with an Ultra 2. With the NV+, browsing performance is too slow for taking full advantage of the Squeezebox. The only way I might try a new version of SBS/LMS is if it promised significant speed improvement. - virgiliomiAspirantI have an Ultra 2 Plus, which has the advantage of a dual-core CPU, versus the single-core Ultra 2. I've had no performance issues, even with three hardware players and an instance of Squeezeplay on my desktop all playing different songs from my (rather small, by comparison) local music library.
- ShardstratAspirantThanks. What's really far too slow for me is browsing the music folders. Tags are great, but sometimes you want to deal with the files themselves. I have time to plan dinner for the whole week or find a solution to fractional reserve banking while standing there with the remote in my hand ;O)
I've said this before, but I'll say it again: Logitech should not have marketed the Squeezebox Touch as being compatible with ReadyNAS products. They should have been honest and claimed real compatibility only with the higher-powered models. And Netgear bears part of the blame.
