I ordered 4 of these drives last week while they were on the HCL, and now that they have arrived I see they are off the list. Based on my experience with the WD1000FYPS drives I'm running I don't have faith that Netgear can push a hard drive vendor to fix their firmware. So I guess I will need to send these Seagate drives back and continue running my existing drives that were also removed from the HCL.
Sorry about that Snipes. We just had to remove them because of the steaming issue that a user reported and we reproduced it in house. All the other drive qualification tests passed without a problem. There is even a work around for his issue if you disable the write cache then you will not see the video stuttering. This of course is not the greatest workaround because you will loose performance. We have a great relationship with Seagate so I have a good feeling this will get resolved quickly.
Thanks for the positive news. I think it's in Seagate's best interest to try and work something out with regards to this problem also because right now there is no other company making 1.5TB drives and I think a lot of these drives are being bought to put into some kind of NAS because 1.5TB is a lot of data to lose if the drive is not used with some kind of RAID system.
On a related note, how might one disable the write cache on the drive for now? Is there some sort of utility you need to download to do this? I'm assuming it can't be done from inside raidator?
Hi spudz72,
You can easily disable it in Frontview>System>performance tab. Like I mentioned before doing this will cause a big hit in performance. If it were me I would just disable it to watch movies and enable back on when I was done. This definitely not a great option but it will hold you over until a fix is ready.
