Following a rebuild of the NAS, the drives now work perfectly.
I would recommend a complete backup of your data before flashing the drives with this latest firmware!!!! Mine could have been a one off but I took all the necessary precautions, NAS box shutdown, pop a box, flash it, pop it back, move onto the next etc. The system log also confirmed that the X-RAID config was borked...
