It probably is a blown transformer (I seem to recall this smell from blowing up transistor radios in my youth). I posted here for two reasons: 1) I don't know the paradigm of these fora. 2) I suspect that these new Seagate 1.5TB drives are the culprits. I haven't had time to check the spec sheets, but I suspect that the 1.5TB drives draw more power than the 750GB drives they just replaced. I thought that this experience should be part of our ongoing quest to get these drives working in the ReadyNAS. I hope Netgear doesn't go and de-list them permanently though. I'm rather committed to them at this point. :-o
Actually I think the 1.5TB drives draw even less then the 750's do. Seagate advertises that the new 1.5's only draw 8 watts at idle, so I think it's probably just coincidence that the p/s pooched and that you just happen to have upgrade to the 1.5's. That's my opinion anyway...
