Happy holidays, Everyone.
On December 24, I received four 1.5TB Seagate drives that I had ordered from NewEgg just a fewe days earlier. All drives had the CC1J firmware. The drives were shipped to me from somewhere in California.
That same day (12/24), I installed all four drives in a brand new ReadyNAS NV+ that I received at the same time. I'm running FrontView 4.1.5T37. I've spent the past couple of days migrating data from a series of USB and Firewire drives to the ReadyNAS. This morning, I decided to check the streaming capability of the ReadyNAS, so I opened DVDPlayer on my 2007 MacBook and then navigated to the share on the ReadyNAS that has all of my ripped DVDs. I picked one and started to play. To my disappointment, the playback was, at times, choppy. Specifically, the video (and sometimes audio) occasionally would freeze for a few seconds and then pick up. I tested this for about 5 minutes. I then tried the same test but used the original Video_TS file that was stored on a FireWire drive attached to my 24" iMac (the FW drive is shared so I could access it from the MacBook); everything played back very smoothly. Should be seeing better performance from the ReadyNAS and, if so, what settings should I change to see better performance?
One other question: When I checked FrontView this morning, I was greeted with two warning messages. One read, "ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 1: Previous count: 1 Current count: 2 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk." The other read: "Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 4: Previous count: 0 Current count: 2 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk." Should I be concerned about these error messages? If so, what should I do about them (call NewEgg or Seagate and request replacements?)?
