Server Crash - unrecoverable (RN3138)
Hi All,
my ReadyNas does not boot anymore. Only the power LED is lit all others are off. The Network LED flashes when I plug in the ethernet cable. I cannot enter the boot menu anymore (Yes I know how to do that I have done it before). This is the 4th (!) time that this happens. As of now NetGear has always sent me a replacment server within 24 hours. This service is really great. Nevertheless I do need to find the root cause as otherwise I need to switch to antother brand as this costs to much time and nerves on our side.
Here are the details:
ON the first 3 servers I had 6.8.0 running and the server was connected to APC Backup-UPS. On the 4th server I finally did a factory reset and OS reinstall and upgraded to 6.9.2. I purchased a APC Smart-UPS and a rack mounted APC ProtectNet to ensure that this issue is not caused by any power peaks or alike. The systems are well grounded ( I had my electrician double measure all again). I restored all my data from my backup and everything was running fine for about 2 weeks. After a reboot it hangs again as described above.
I do need to find the root-cause. I see the following possibiliites but I'm happy if someone comes up with another idea:
- The RN3138 itself is buggy
But then others should have similar problems. Anyone else encountering those problems? - The software that I installed/used
Actually it would surpirse me (and the hotline told me it shouldn't be the case).
I installed the the following apps: php, phpsysinfo, VirtualHere, MySQL, Timemachine and VirtualBox.
Everything running fine and did some reboots without problems.
The reason for the final reboot was that Timemachine was complaining that the backup disk was not available. I tried all the potential solution from the net (enabling/disabling, etc.) nothing worked so I rebooted. - My Hardware environment
I have no clue anymore. The infrastructure (Rack, Power, Grounding, etc.) was installed by a professional electrican. All connections to the outside world are protected with professional surge protection. As of now there are no other servers in the rack and the UPS did not note any power failures or alike. What else can it be?
We are seeking for your help as we need to make a decision on how to proceed from here. We do need this (or another) server up and running.
Thank you very much

That's very unusual. I don't recall the same issue leading to hardware replacement being run into that often.
Have you tried changing power cables?
Have you tried connecting the NAS power directly into a power outlet bypassing the UPS?Is the serial number of your unit in the range covered by the Service Note for RN3130, RN3138, WC7500, and WC7600v2
Please open a new case (if you haven't already) for the unit you currently have and PM me the case number. Thanks.

Hello,
thank you for taking care of my post and the quick reply.
Have you tried changing power cables?Yes when exchanging the 2nd server I exchanged the cables as well.
Have you tried connecting the NAS power directly into a power outlet bypassing the UPS?
No, but since I had the issue with two independent (one brand new) UPS I don't think it is an issue with the UPS. But I can try next time.
Is the serial number of your unit in the range covered by the Service Note for RN3130, RN3138, WC7500, and WC7600v2
No it is a different serial number starting with 4HMB7BEWxxxx
Please open a new case (if you haven't already) for the unit you currently have and PM me the case number. Thanks.I don't know yet whether I want to exchange the server again. I'm considering either upgrading to another model or even another brand. I really love the system when it is running and I would like to avoid to switch to something else but as you can imagine my confidence is near zero now.
Q: What would be the next (better) model instead of the RN3138? Must be rackbased and should have 4 trays.
Thank you very much

Actually I found various articles about the RN3138 (and other models) that NetGear is considering to replace. The root cause is the Intel Atom chip with the symptom that the server will not boot anymore after a while (see here for example). So to me this seems to apply in my case.
Q: Is it possible to order/exchange the RN3138 with another processor?
Thank you
