Server Error kmem_cache_alloc+9b
I have daily backup job on My ReadyNAS 424 . A share is backed up to an external SSD. The job is a full backup every day At some point last week, the share became larger than the capacity of the SSD. I got an alert message, and a notification about potentially changing the backup schedule. Backup job had 'stalled out' in an incomplete state. I removed the scheduling for the job until I could get a larger SSD.
The SSD was formatted to EXT4. . I tried to use the admin page settings to reformat the external drive. I was unable to either format or eject the USB drive. In fact, even after I physically detached the drive, it still shows pn the admin page in the state it was in when the problem occurred. I also have an error message displayed on the front panel.
kmem_cache_alloc+9b
I did a look here in Community on the potential causes - need to run Diagmostics
See attached
I used RAIDar to run diagnostics. I seem to get a clean bill of health (all the errors appeared to be about the USB drive), but to be honest this is our primary data storage and I don't want to reboot and have it go crashing. I suspect a restart will resolve the issue.
Thanks

I think restarting the NAS will resolve it, and that you'll need to find a good time to do that.
It sounds like you still have access to the shares, so you should be able to back up the data to a USB drive over the network if you like.

Thanks fpr the reply.
I'm going to backup critical data over the network. I can't attach any devices directly to the ReadyNAS currently till the errors are cleared (did a test this AM)
Thanks again- JonBServerGeekAspirant
BIG surprise. After getting backups pf the critical data, I attempted rebooting.
First, I tried using RAIDAR's Restart button. Had the right credentials = but nothing occured.
Went to the admin page and clicked on Restart. Got the progress bar, but it just seemed to hang at almost the end. Then the Admin page timed out. Used an IP search tool and a PING, nope, not home. Went to the machine - saw that last moments of "See you later" THEN the error message reappeared. Hmmm. Not good. Now the ReadyNAS doesn't appear either via RAIDAR or pinging. OK, try the power switch, nope - not happening either.
In the end, I had to pull the power supply. Yes, I was very grateful to see the progress bar during loading of the OS, and -- in the end -- the errors were cleared, I think the bug prevented the 'soft' shutdown process from completing. I wonder if it was trying to unmount the no-longer present USB drive, NO - I am not going to try to re-create that to answer my speculation.
Thanks
