Where is this file global section of smb.conf on the ReadyNas 4200 V2 and how do I get to it? With SMB1 disabled we can not get to the shares on the NAS

You need to enable ssh accesss in the NAS to get to this file. You do that by installing "Root Enable SSH Access" from here: https://kb.netgear.com/24551/ReadyNAS-Add-ons-for-RAIDiator-4-2-x86
On an OSX system you can then get shell access to the NAS using terminal. With Windows, you need a tool like putty. Either way, the username is "root" and the password is the NAS admin password.
The file path is ./etc/samba/smb.conf
