I agree w/you, except my motor concern is with windings, not bearings. Though I will readily admit I have no idea what the physical construction is of HDD motors.
That's why I used the incandescent lamp example--inrush of current to a filament when that filament is already hot is where most failures occur (the lamp "pop" when you turn it on--for the last time!).
