SSH Copy Large File to External USB Stops at~2.6GB

Unfortunately in plain U**X there are no verbose options available, including cp (no cp -v ...). Alternate, rsync -av comes into my mind.
First thing I would ask for is a file system check to be run un both the source and destination file systems.
If the cp does terminate after small data amounts, have an eye what the Kernel does output using dmesg
Does the shell hang while executing the copy - Command is ok.

If the disk is connected to the front USB port, then try switching to the rear. The front port is USB 2.0 (and only delivers USB 2.0 power levels). The rear ports are USB 3.0.
It is of course also possible to copy the file over the network to a different destination.
StephenB are you aware on unpatched issues on the USB firmware level, e.g. on the USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 connection? as part of the continuous product management on my favorite NAS platform, this was done over the years, even if brining in certain short term risks like power failures during the chipset updates. Some combinations caused certain reliability issues. Ok, affected are more USB 3.0 and USB 3.x chipsets but native USB 2.0 usually.
