Orbi RBR850 crashes with large downloads

My kids and thier gaming require large downloads from battle.net and Epic games. These downloads are often greater than 100GB.

When they start to download the router RBR850 loses its connection to the internt.  This will occur at 5GHz, 2.4Gz or wired.

I have COX internet with Gigablast

When this occurs I can be logged into the CM1200 cable modem and see that it does not lose any internet conenction.  My internet connection with COX is working fine.

Any ideas on what might be going on?

  • My Orbi 750 is running Firmware Version V4.6.8.2_2.1.9.  Support suggested turning off Armor and that stopped the crashing. Awaiting a real resolution since paying for Armor but having to have it disabled for a game to download from Steam shouldn't be the solution.

What Firmware version is currently loaded?

Is Armor or IPv6 enabled on the RBR?

Check the LAN cable in between the RBR and CM modem. CAT6 is recommended.

Is the game consoles wire connected to the RBR? or wireless connected?

How many devices do you have online when the downloads are happening?

      Thanks for the reply!

      Firmware V3.2.18.1_1.4.14
      No Armor or IP6
      Brand new short cat6 cable

I’ve tried the game PCs wired, 5ghz, and 2.4ghz. Downloads start at 30-40MB/s and slowly slow down and then the router is inaccessible

We have about 15-20 devices on the net doorbell, thermostats, PCs, voip phone, multiple Amazon echoes

Is Link Aggregation enabled on the CM modem? It should be disabled.
Someting to try at a later date if you have a spare LAN cable, enable LAG on the modem and RBR. See if this changes anything.

Something to try as well, if you can, Power OFF the modem and RBR. Connect the game device to the back of the CM modem where the RBR is connected too. Disconnect the RBR. Power ON the modem and game device. Download something check it's operation...

  • Same issue here. RBR750 v4. 6.3.7 CM1200. I thought it was an issue with a device that was connected. The Orbi would go solid purple and my wired and wireless connections would drop. A reboot of the Orbi would fix it for a few minutes. Eventually I would have no issue and it was unexplained. It wasn't until I attempted to download the Cold War 87GB patch on an additional wired PC and the Orvi went solid purple again that I realized it was the download crashing the Orbi. I had been downloading the patch on another wired PC earlier in the day when the issues were first occurring. I've never had this happen during any other download.

Thanks for helping to check this. I recommend both you and dwax open support tickets with NG support as soon as possible.

I'll try and pass this on to NG as well.

has there been any resolution to this crashing issue?  Also have the 750 and never had an issue with download crashing previous routers.  Also have issues with just devices working when they are connected (ie. laptop and phone are both connected to the orbi wifi, but when trying to load an email or website it just spins until you disconnect from wifi and reconnect).

Mine seemed to fix itself with a firmware update. I paused all big downloads for a long time and then happened to boot steam up after a restart without really thinking and had multiple games update at fast speeds with no issue. Sorry I can’t be of any more help.

The router has issues, and i was not able to correct with tech support. They wanted me to update the same ROM version and reset all settings but that does not work.

i hated to waste the $$ of the 3 node system that i purchased, ~$900 however i went back to Eero Pro 6 with 4 nodes, and i am getting the reliability and thruput

with my Orbi and my ipad next to the router i was never able to get more then 400mbs /sec, and my imac was not able to get more then 500mbs/sec

with the eero pro 6 in the same spot

i just ran speed test and my ipad resulted in 658mb/sec and my imac 868mb/sec

also, the eero ios app is way better

the Orbi did have better distance range outside..

I'll be testing this FW version out myself on my 8 series.

Currently downloading a 100Gb BattleField 2042 free weekend game...

I see CoD Vanguard is free for the weekend as well. Will try this too.

I just got a new PC running Win11.  For the first time, I'm using Ethernet and I'm getting this issue when trying to DL games from Battle.net.  I did NOT exhibit this problem when getting games from Steam.  I'll run a test on the Xbox app later today.  What I did find out was pulling the Ethernet plug and turning on WiFi seems to have stopped this issue.

My system has an Asus Z690-P MB with:

      WiFi: Intel AX201

      Ethernet: Realtek Gaming 2.5G

My ethernet connection is going through a Netgear GS305 switch.  I don't think it's gonna be an ethernet protocol issue with the computer since the switch would be rebuilding the packet (replacing MAC address, etc) so it should be catching protocol issues.  If I had to guess, we really are seeing a DoS attack on the switch itself.  Seems like when it gets a connection that ramps up too fast, it kills the router.  My link speed on WiFi is 576/649 Mbps, so that probably isn't triggering the attack. If I have time this weekend, I'll play around and see what the magic DL speed is that triggers this bug.  I think it should probably get sent up as a security issue since we are seeing a DoS getting triggered.

What is the Mfr and model# of the Internet Service Providers modem/ONT the NG router is connected too?

What LAN port were you using?

What LAN port did you move too?
