Streaming .mkv-files ? (ReadyNAS Duo v2)
Hi,
I'm having some issues streaming .mkv-files from my ReadyNAS Duo v2 to my PS3.
I used to run TVersity on my laptop and just share my mediafolder from there but I recently bought the NAS and was hoping to eliminate my PC from the equation all together.
I've tried searching this forum aswell as google and from the hits I've gotten I've come to the conclusion that it apparently works for some but not everyone.
I'm dumbfounded at this point and I'd really appreciate some info regarding this. Is it possible to stream .mkv-files from the ReadyNAS to my PS3?
I'm running:
RAIDiator 5.3.5
I've downloaded and installed ReadyDLNA (1.0.25) from: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=27946
(The file I installed was ReadyDLNA_1.0.25-arm.bin )
I've activated SMB, AFP, NFS protocols for the share, but everytime I try to access them via my PS3 I get "unsupported format" (roughly translated) and it refuses to stream them.
I can map a network drive for the share and through TVersity share that to the PS3, but I'm really really hoping I don't have to do that.
I also found a tip regarding transcoding the .mkv-files to .avi or .mp4, but I'd have to do that to each .mkv-file before uploading them to the NAS, and I'd really really like to avoid that aswell.
Anyone have any ideas or am I screwed? :)
Thanks in advance!

- JarnoGGuideThe Playstation 3 does not support mkv container format. What TVersity did from your laptop was transcode the mkv files on the fly to a different container (like avi or mp4) and then stream it to your playstation. This means that none of the "direct" ways (SMB, AFP, NVS, DLNA) will work.
I know that for the x86 models, there is a Playstation 3 Media Server add-on and I think you can also use Plex. I do not know if there are any solutions for the ARM models yet. - VikholmAspirantThanks for the info.
I had a feeling that might be the case. I'll try the "Plex Media Server for Linux - ReadyNAS Duo v2 (ARM based) - v0.9.6.6" when I get home tonight and hope that it'll work.
Thank you again for taking the time.
EDIT: just read this part:
"Note that ARM versions of Plex Media Server is not able to transcode, these are only for direct play. Works best with Plex Media Center or Google TV clients."
So basically this means I need a newer version (not ARM based) of the ReadyNAS or something other than the PS3 to stream MKV-files? - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserTranscoding is not the same thing as remuxing to a new container format.
- KydDynoMyteAspirantI hear good things about WD Live playing most everything thrown at it, but luckily I remembered I have an old Asus O!Play. Hooked it up to a wireless bridge and have been able to steam most any format.

Good point, I was talking about remuxing, not transcoding. - tiranorAspirantAFAIK, only PS3 media server can remux for the PS3, the others only transcode.
- JarnoGGuideHmm, I thought TVersity could remux as well... Now I wonder how my very old crappy server (Athlon2000+, which was replaced by my nas) was able to get mkv files to my ps3 using TVersity
