Streaming options (Apple TV or Roku)

I have a readynas duo, which I have firefly set up on, and can stream from this to a PC with itunes no problem. I was looking into getting an apple tv 3 to give a decent way to stream music from my readynas to my amp/tv (I have Xbox, but the interface in there to play music from the NAS is really rubbish). I also wanted to have a remote on my iphone, so apple TV seemed the obvious choice.
Looking on this forum it appears that it's not possible to connect to firefly with apple TV (without having a PC turned on). Is that correct? If I buy a new apple TV, there is no jailbreak available so can't hack that to install something else. I have seen mention of Plex, but that can't be installed on a Duo, right?
What about a Roku, can I stream music from the NAS to this and get a decent app for the iphone to use as a remote? I'm not bothered about streaming videos as I have my X-box.

Any advice appreciated

  • After some thought and messing around, I see that XBMC works well with the ReadyNAS duo (I just installed it on a netbook) and there is a great XBMC remote app for the iphone. So I think I'm going to get a raspberrypi and install XBMC on that. Much more fun too
