Switch or router? ReadyNas duo

Hey guys,

I've finally upgraded my laptop with an express card gigabit Ethernet port as I was hardly using my ReadyNas Duo because of the slow 100mbit speed.

I have a adsl / router combo, but it only has 100bit. I want to connect my laptop and Ready Nas duo at gigabit speeds, but keep my Internet from my modem router.

Do I need to buy another router? or a cheaper switch?.

This is what I'm thinking.

Modem / router -> switch... and I plug both my laptop and Nas into the switch. Will that give me access to the readynas at gigabit speeds, while maintaining the Internet connection?

My router currently handles ips / DHCP.

I'm thinking of this switch. http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000 ... ag=hl08-21

Many help for the advice guys!

  • Buy Gbit switch which is capable of Jumbo frames and you have it covered ;)

    I personally have Netgear GS608v3

    Your setup should be connected all with cables though to get maxximum out of it.

    Setup itself is pretty straightforward:

    Router/Modem -> Switch -> NAS

    ----> Laptop

    Then enable Jumbo frames on your NAS and Laptop, after that sit back and enjoy... :)

    I wouldnt recommend that one, as some users have had problems in this forum with that combo and also TP-Link is "infamous" for not supporting Jumbo Frames above 4k...
  • Excellent, many thanks for the quick reply.

    I know my express card can do Jumbo frames, best check that the switch can, then I'm good to go guess! Cheers

    OH, look like it support jumbo frames upto 4054 bytes. Good enough?
  • Just saw your update, great reply. Thanks again!

    Okay... I'll look around for another switch! Cheers!
  • I dont have a Duo anymore to check it out, but it was probably capable of 8k
    (You can check it in frontview actually, by ticking that box and it will show exact MTU which is set after reboot)

    Still even if youre laptop isnt capable of larger than 4k frames, I would still buy switch which could do 9K frames, as price difference is neglible...
    And who knows, when you are gonna buy a new laptop ;)

    As a sidenote, you will probably get a minor performance hit on internet speeds, as there will be 100Mbit/s, 1,5K frame bottleneck between Router and the rest of devices.
    So switch has to do a lot of buffering, shouldnt be a big problem though as ADSL isnt anyway near fast enough and if switch is decent you wont notice it at all ;)

    But if not, I'll just go with what you use!

    Actually 8-port GS608 has a smaller brother GS605, which is 5-port ;)

    I'm tempted by the http://www.ebuyer.com/52760-netgear-pro ... itch-gs105 due to it's small size.

    Will do also probably (never used it), but specs look good, also metal housing is better for heat dissipation... ;)

    Store-and-forward
    128 KB on-chip packet buffering
    Jumbo frame: up to 9,720 bytes

    If you dont care about looks, you could buy that one, also it supports larger frames than GS60x ...
  • haha, silly me, I assumed the lower number was an older model lol.

    Looks like we have a winner! Thanks again Etz
