Switching Drives
Ok here is a scenario, I have a NAS 312 running with an old NAS 102 if they were both running the same firmware, could I effectively switch drives from the 312 to the 102 and it would then work the same, apart from the obviously slower NAS drive?
Reason behind this, is I want to keep the 102 as a backup should any problems occur.
Also can anyone confirm if drives are X-Raided could you remove just one of either drive and use this in the NAS102 and would work still? but obviously without it being XRaid anymore?

There is a procedure for migrating the RN100 disks to the RN300 system, but not the reverse.
There's another poster asking about this also (https://community.netgear.com/t5/ReadyNAS-Hardware-Compatibility/Moving-314-disks-to-104-Compatibility/m-p/1014827#M13457). It might be a candidate for the ideas exchange.
Ok how about this, if I had 2 x NAS312 Drives 2 Bay's... one was running all the time with a backup USB for safe measure, then the other was empty... if one went down for whatever reason (and wasn't the drives of course) could I simply switch both drives into the other NAS and boot up and use as normal?

Yes. Though its best to keep the firmware in both units matched. The backup NAS will attempt to reinstall the firmware if the version in its flash is different from what's on the disks.
