With electronics problems can emerge at any time. One reason why backups are recommended.
If an RMA is needed, I'd suggest putting a spare disk (must not be from your array) in the replacement unit, ensuring the firmware is up to date, then powering down and following the migration procedure: http://www.readynas.com/kb/faq/boot/how_do_i_migrate_disks_over_from_an_existing_readynas_to_another
