If you are using the NAS hostname, then try using the IP address. Also try entering a Windows credential for the NAS (using a NAS account logon). You can use the NAS admin account for this if you don't have any users configured on the NAS.
If you've never entered a credential, begin by typing "credential manager" in the windows search bar.

I mapped a new network drive using the IP address a second time using the "log in using different credentials" with the admin NAS account and password and got the same results: I checked the Credential Manager in WIndows Settings and it shows the new addition with the NAS admin account and password. I assume there is nothing more I can do on that front.
What I really don't understand is how/why it happened in the middle of copying files. Over the last couple of months I have have dumped litterally terabytes of data onto that NAS with no problems at all.
Am I right in thinking an OS reinstall is the next likely step? I do have backups of all the files on there if I screw that up but we're talking just under 16 terabytes that would need to be reloaded.

I don't recommend an OS reinstall at this point.
Check that SMB is still enabled on the NAS, and perhaps try toggling it off/on. Also check that the volume hasn't been place in read-only mode (look at the logs).
Also, try opening CMD on the PC and entering
net use * /delete
net use t: \\nas-ip-address\data /user:admin nas-admin-password
and see if that successfully maps the data volume to drive letter t.

The SMB protocol is still enabled on the unit but I was unable to toggle it off/on on the backups share as SMB is the only protocol enabled. The other shares have AFP and DLNA enabled as well as SMB. No mention in the logs about read-only access and the Shares tab on the Admin Page show read/write access for all the shares.
I happened to notice the message "Network changed" on the affected box itself yesterday but don't know if there were any additional messages. Nothing showed up in the logs and I still could not copy files to it.
Can I specify the affected unit in the "net use * /delete" command? I would rather not mess with the unit that is still working (and in fact is still in the process of backing up my rather large E drive as I type this).
