I mapped a new network drive using the IP address a second time using the "log in using different credentials" with the admin NAS account and password and got the same results: I checked the Credential Manager in WIndows Settings and it shows the new addition with the NAS admin account and password. I assume there is nothing more I can do on that front.
What I really don't understand is how/why it happened in the middle of copying files. Over the last couple of months I have have dumped litterally terabytes of data onto that NAS with no problems at all.
Am I right in thinking an OS reinstall is the next likely step? I do have backups of all the files on there if I screw that up but we're talking just under 16 terabytes that would need to be reloaded.

I don't recommend an OS reinstall at this point.
Check that SMB is still enabled on the NAS, and perhaps try toggling it off/on. Also check that the volume hasn't been place in read-only mode (look at the logs).
Also, try opening CMD on the PC and entering
net use * /delete
net use t: \\nas-ip-address\data /user:admin nas-admin-password
and see if that successfully maps the data volume to drive letter t.

The SMB protocol is still enabled on the unit but I was unable to toggle it off/on on the backups share as SMB is the only protocol enabled. The other shares have AFP and DLNA enabled as well as SMB. No mention in the logs about read-only access and the Shares tab on the Admin Page show read/write access for all the shares.
I happened to notice the message "Network changed" on the affected box itself yesterday but don't know if there were any additional messages. Nothing showed up in the logs and I still could not copy files to it.
Can I specify the affected unit in the "net use * /delete" command? I would rather not mess with the unit that is still working (and in fact is still in the process of backing up my rather large E drive as I type this).

Yes, you can specify the affected drive letter. The reason for recommending that you delete them all is because ot the Windows restriction of using different credentials for two different connections to the same server. By deleting them all, you are assured that is not a part of the problem. But you can certainly try just the one first, especially if you believe that is the only connection to the NAS. Net use ? will give you all the options.
I recently had a similar issue with the shares on my EDA500 and had to toggle the SMB protocol. You can always temporarilly enable another protocol if you need to.

I went ahead and used the "net use * /delete" command (which worked) and then mapped the unit to T: drive okay (once I remembered to add "/data" to the IP address ;() which also worked. I was able to access the Backups share but it still would not allow me to copy files to it. I can still copy files from that unit. I re-established my mapped network drives (using the NAS name as IP addresses sometimes change after a total power shut down) and still am unable to copy files to that unit. I checked the admin page and it says the Backups share is not shared and there is no protocol running for that share (the other shares are okay). I tried to restart the SMB protcol and it failed with the message "Commit failed. Code 1002030001". I also tried to start the AFP protocol and it also failed with the same message. This "Not shared" makes no sense to me since I can still access that share through my file manager and copy files from that unit (but not to the unit).
