Unable to delete folder on NAS
I am a newbie at this but would very much appreciate some help. I am trying to delete (using Vista) an empty folder on my ReadyNAS. I get an error in Vista: "Destination Folder Access Denied - You need permission to perform this action." I try to change ownership in Vista but get nowhere. I am guessing it has to do with permissions on my folder on the NAS. Under Frontview the share name is media. Under advanced options the Share Folder Owner is listed as "nobody" and the Share Folder Group is listed as "nogroup." What do I need to do to get this in order so I will be the owner of these folder under Vista? Thank you.

You don't need to. Follow these directions to reset the ownership and permissions to the correct values for a share in Share mode:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3795
and you should be able to delete the files and folders normally.
Thanks
I've the same problems but I can't read the solution.

That's strange, the link just points to a post in the FAQ forum.
I'll go ahead and PM you with the contents of the link. - howardg1AspirantI too would like to read this FAQ entry but it says "You are not authorised to read this forum."
- howardg1AspirantCome to think of it, it's a pretty insolent message to get when you are looking for a solution on permissions!
- ewokNETGEAR ExpertIt looks like the forum containing that post has been retired and an appropriate entry hasn't been entered into the new FAQ. I'll go ahead and let the right people know. Here's the content of the FAQ entry:
Use the following procedure to change the ownership and permissions of the contents of a share:
1. Navigate to the Shares page in Frontview.
2. Click on any of the access icons for that share, i.e. the icon under Win, NFS, etc.
3. Click on the Advanced Options tab.
4. Set the "Share folder owner" and "Share folder group" to the appropriate values. In Share mode, the owner should be the name of the share. Whichever user and group these boxes contain will become the owner and group of the files and folders in the share.
5. Set the appropriate permissions in the "rights" dropdowns. The contents of the share will have their ownerships and permissions reset to these settings.
6. Check the "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders..." setting. Note that this will replace the ownership and permissions settings of all files and folders in the share.
7. Click Apply.
Note that on page reload, the "Set ownership and permission for existing files and folders..." checkbox will no longer be checked. This is expected behavior and it is set on a per-use basis. - ultrabikeAspirantThanks. This worked.
- nmoreaAspirantI was having this same issue... thanks for the resolution! It worked for me!
- thedogshongersAspirant@ ewok ,I wish i had jumped to the end of this subject, I figured it out on my readynas duo using xp pro in the shares listing/(click on)NFS,AFP etc/advanced /Grant rename and delete privileges to non-owner of files(checked)if only i had saw your post 1st instead of days of torture, lol
- Hello everyone.
I am having this problem and am obviously not that bright as I am having trouble still. I have three USERS, me, kids and Mrs. We are all in the same GROUP "Family". I have left all the Share_Folder_Owner as the name of the folder i.e. data for the "data" share and then for the Share Folder Group I have changed that to "Family" but I still cannot delete certain files.
I am obliviously doing something wrong. Please help!
Thanks

The easiest thing to do (if you don't care why the files can't be deleted, you just want to delete them), is to connect to the share over CIFS as admin and delete the files.
If you want to know why you can't delete them, right click on a file that you can't delete, select Properties, and see who is the owner of the file and what the permissions are. Problems like these are usually caused by the file ownership or permissions.
