Unable to delete folder on NAS
I am a newbie at this but would very much appreciate some help. I am trying to delete (using Vista) an empty folder on my ReadyNAS. I get an error in Vista: "Destination Folder Access Denied - You need permission to perform this action." I try to change ownership in Vista but get nowhere. I am guessing it has to do with permissions on my folder on the NAS. Under Frontview the share name is media. Under advanced options the Share Folder Owner is listed as "nobody" and the Share Folder Group is listed as "nogroup." What do I need to do to get this in order so I will be the owner of these folder under Vista? Thank you.

- LeftArm1AspirantI have just had an issue with deleting files but it was not the permissions that were the problem but the path length.
The folders were nested very deep and the path had reached the max for the OS. (Windows 7 Vista 260 characters Windows XP 250 Characters)
The error massage in Windows was "Unable to Delete" rather than the usual access denied.
The solution was to map the share as a drive part way along the path to reduce the path length.
As an example.
\\ReadyNas\sharename\folder1\folder2\folder3\folder4\folder5\ etc....
Map the drive to folder4 so the path becomes
Z:\folder5\ etc...
If the mapping is made only to the share name then the reduction in the path length will be small. I think this may be why in previous posts this has worked for some people but not others.
I hope others find this useful. - nicola1AspirantHi,
Is there a procedure to map the "share" as an Hard drive in WIndows 7 ?
hope you cn help
thanks in advance
nico - dobrzanAspirantYou would have to conf your volumes as iSCSI and on win 7 scan for iSCSI volumes which will see as a HDD.

You don't need to. Follow these directions to reset the ownership and permissions to the correct values for a share in Share mode:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=3795
and you should be able to delete the files and folders normally.
All I get when trying the link is: You are not authorised to read this forum. Whats the story.
Once again I can't delete files. It is soooooooooo frustrating. Its only with Netgear ReadyNAS's.......sorry but its true,
I don't have any issue with other brands and I have three brands in use (Qnap or Synology). Is this ever going to be resolved? I don;t believe it is a Microsoft issue. I have the same problem since over 5 years of use. NV+, NVX, Pro2, Pro4. One day its fine and the next doesn't work. Even when I reset the permissions, it works and then a week later it doesn't. I have to do over and over and over! Sorry, am really frustrated as am bored fixing it. I would have expected some solution by now for "The action cannot be completed as the folder or File is open in another application" Errors. It can't be open as I just turned the Nas on. Ug  - coulstonAspirantI'm also having a problem deleting a folder from one of my shares. I followed the steps above to reset the ownership and permissions on the share, and I've connected to it in OS X as admin, but I'm still unable to delete one particular folder. The name contains several special characters, which I believe is the problem. I've also tried deleting the file from the browser interface and it does not work.
The Sharing & Permissions sections of the info panel in OS X says "You have unknown access", and the size shows 0 KB. Any ideas on how I can delete this folder? - ewokNETGEAR ExpertMake sure you're really connected as admin by creating a file in the share and verifying its ownership. What is the name of the problematic folder?

I map using net use net use S: \\pro4\c /User:admin "password"
I create a test file and can confirm that permissions show as admin(PRO4\admin)ewok wrote: What is the name of the problematic folder?
Random and nothing specific. It could be just a root folder. Why do you ask? Are the permission "limitations" on the ReadNAS?
I have had this issue for 5 years since my first NAS (NV+) using the Sparc firmware and continues to be an issue on a PRO4 using the (x386 Firware). It has got so annoying that I have started using my other Brand NAS as primary which is sad. I like the ReadyNAS's (excluding no eSATA ports and the USB3 port being no faster than USB2 on the PRO2). This honestly isn't a bitching session however something needs to be done about this issue. It is common to a lot of users and not a problem other Brands (which aren't perfect either).
We can't eep resetting the Permissions on All folders each time nor can we give all users admin access to all folders.
Perhaps if we knew the limitations it may help?
Cheers - msdLuminaryObservation:
I have being trying to do a process of elimination.
One or two folders have NO permissions assigned to them. How can that be?
I can confirm that this folder may have been created via extracting content from a WinRAR file and across to NAS.
Any Ideas?
manually assigning permissions via Folder Properties (on PC) will then allow deleting. But question is how can a folder be placed onto NAS with any permission being assigned
New Observation: After trying to move a folder that failed. I came back to it say 30 mins later and it works. It's like as though the NAS is unsure of permissions and overtime recognises who you are and then allows changes. Strange. I tested this twice and in both cases worked.
Anybody have any theroies on this?
ANOTHER EDIT: This seems like a Permissions carrying forward Issue, I noticed that when I moved a folder from one directory to another, upon checking the permissions, it shows as None.
Both locations are Subfolders of the "Media" I have a Folder called "To Watch" and another called "Watched". When I watch something I move it.
SHARE PERMISSIONS on MEDIA = : CIFS: Read Only with Write Enabled users being myself ADMIN1. I can't add Admin as I believe it would by default have access regardless. There isn't any consistancy as Out of the 10 folders I moved in just now, some can be changed ad others can't. Keeping in mind ALL could be changed (as I just moved them). ALL were moved from "To Watch" to "Watch". Why is it that some can no longer be (name) changed and some can.
Weird. - RoborisAspirantI'm having a similar issue. I'm unable to delete a virtual machine file I have stored on my NAS even when connected as an admin.
The NAS is:
Hostname: MediaServer
Model: ReadyNAS Pro Business Edition [X-RAID2]
Serial: 20S193RA0028C
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.2.19-T4
Memory: 1024 MB [4-5-5-15 DDR2]
IPv4 address: 1+2: 192.168.0.6
Volume C: Online, X-RAID2, 6 disks, 60% of 9245 GB used
I updated to 4.2.19 as part of this but was having the same problem under 4.2.17. When I try to delete the folder under OS X Lion (10.7.0) I get an error message that says "The operation can't be completed because the item 'Windows Disks' is in use." When I try to delete the folder under Win7 SP1 I don't get an error message but the folder doesn't delete.
My security policy is set for User level control. I've tried resetting the ownership and permission in the shares page of FrontView. I've also tried granting rename and delete privileges to non-owners. Neither made a difference. I'm sending in log files in case there's something informative in there.
I've tried connecting as admin under OS X and I've tried taking ownership of the folder under Windows 7. Again neither made a difference. The Read-Only radio button is checked under Properties but even if I uncheck it it comes right back after I close the window. If anyone has anyone else has any ideas I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks. - ewokNETGEAR Expert

Can you give me step by step instructions including the actual files you used to reproduce this problem? There are so many possible causes for various permissions problems that it's difficult to diagnose without seeing the problem for myself.
